Maryann Walters

Age 72, of Vanderbilt, PA, passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones on November 9th, 2025. She was born Maryann Johnson to parents Charles Lee Johnson and Mary Schearer on June 10, 1953, in Washington, PA. 

Maryann worked as a professor at Penn State Fayette before her retirement. Prior to that, she worked at WVCI and the Connellsville Community Action Program, where she taught literacy and GED classes. She took great pride in helping others learn and succeed, and her students remember her for her patience, encouragement, and kindness. 

Maryann made people feel at ease — whether with a laugh, a story, or simply a listening ear. She met life with determination, strength, and a deep love for the people around her, and she had a way of showing up for others that felt steady, genuine, and true. She loved gardening, working on puzzles, playing music, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

Maryann is survived by her loving husband and soulmate, Jeff Walters; her children: Jenny McCandless (Jeff Courtney), Brian McCandless, and Amanda McCandless (John-Paul Dowling); her brother, Billy Johnson (Robin Santore); six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She is preceded in passing by her parents, her sister Peggy, and her brother Edward Lee Johnson.
