John E. Wood

With solemn hearts, we announce the passing of John E. Wood (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), whose presence will be deeply missed, having departed on June 30, 2025 at the age of 79. John was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Margaret "Maggie" Wood; his son Andrew "Andy" Wood (Lindsay); his siblings, Eugene (Carol), Janet, Andrea (Dennis) and Wendy (Barb); and his grandchildren, Phineas and Beatrice Wood.

Born in Detroit and raised in Pittsburgh, John was a member of the second graduating class of Fox Chapel High School where he played soccer. He attended Penn State University prior to joining the U.S. Navy where he served as Boatswain’s Mate 3rd Class on the U.S.S. Saratoga. His love of boating was evident throughout his life, and he spent countless hours lovingly restoring old boats. His successful entrepreneurial adventures kept him busy but never from what was most important; his fiercely loyal heart belonged to his family. John found great joy in coaching and later refereeing soccer. He was also an avid cyclist and fisherman. He volunteered his time to Contact Pittsburgh, a 24-hour crisis hotline and spent years volunteering at Meals on Wheels. Toward the end of his life, he discovered his inner artist and spent much of his time painting watercolors. John was a joy to know and love, and his own love knew no bounds. He will forever remain in our hearts.

A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, July 26th from 10-12 Noon at Christ Episcopal Church, North Hills, 5910 Babcock Blvd., Pittsburgh PA 15237, with a memorial service following at 12 Noon.  In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to Brite Wellness, 1310 Old Freeport Rd., Suite 38214, Pittsburgh PA 15238 or https://www.britewellness.org.
